What Is EctoLife, Is it the World’s first Artificial Womb?

Baby in EctoLife

A video of an artificial womb is going viral. Hashen Al-Ghaili, biotechnologist, film producer, and science communicator has introduced the concept of an artificial womb. In the video, the narrator tells the whole concept of the egg-like Pod of an artificial womb called EctoLife. The narrator also tells that the baby can be customized under the Elite plan.

After the commencement of the Ectolife video and a Facebook post on December 12, 2022, the whole perspective of giving birth to a baby changed. People are still confused about it, it is a concept or actually something that exists like this.

The producer said, “The concept of EctoLife is based on over 50 years of groundbreaking scientific research by researchers globally”. He also added, “Background in science and technology to develop brand new concepts”.

How is this Artificial Womb Pod?

This artificial womb pod provides the same environment as in the mother’s womb. This pod will have two artificial umbilical cords. One will provide nutrients, vital hormones, antibodies, growth factor oxygen and an amniotic-like liquid (Lactate Ringer’s Solution), whereas the second cord will manage the baby’s wastage.

The pod will have 360° cameras which will keep an eye on the baby 24×7. There will be various censors which will monitor the baby’s growth, development and action. This pod have a screen which will tell the whole body composition and health of the baby.

Beliefs of the Scientists and Experts

Many scientists believe that the days are not so far that artificial wombs will be the reality, and in the next 50 to 60 years 70% of births are going to be by artificial wombs. Some experts even told that if some ethical restrictions were relaxed, this process could start in the next few years. At the same time, some experts also say that this concept is going to take so much time as till now scientists haven’t succeeded in so many transplants.

This concept is not real but only the brainchild of HashemAl-Ghaili. He only believes that one day it can be possible.

The EctoLife concept has a huge facility with 75 Labs, each will have up to 400 artificial wombs or pods. These facilities can grow up to 30,000 lab-grown babies each year. These labs and pods will be infection free. Moreover, AI technology can play a vital role in these facilities.

Role of AI in Artificial Womb

Parents seeing their baby's growth

In this concept, the video narrator said, “If there is any defect in the DNA of the baby then AI will search that DNA and replace it with the new DNA. Basically, the concept is to load the DNA data of both mother and father to examine the disorder and disease present in the parents. Finally, after the data is uploaded, the faulty DNA which can cause any disease will be removed.

In the last few months, Artificial Intelligence is growing insanely. Everything is turning into AI. This revolutionary intelligence started with some of the famous AI creations like chatGPT and Midjourney. Artificial intelligence is growing and it is reducing human labour.

ChatGPT is an example of advanced Artificial intelligence which knows almost everything. For an instant, if you will ask for a poem for you it will compose a poem instantly. And so, the Midjourney does. But it creates the picture of what you will give the command to it.

Role of more advanced AI like chatGPT and Midjourney will play a vital role in Artificial womb pod. Till now no such AI is developed for such a concept but in future, it could be.

What Al-Ghaili thinks of this concept –

Hashem Al-Ghaili says, “These concepts are already been achieved by scientists and engineers and it is 100 per cent science-based”. He also added, “The artificial-intelligence-based system also monitors the physical features of your baby and reports any potential genetic abnormalities”.

As published by Mirror.co.uk. He says ” Artificial womb facilities could become a reality in 10 years or so if ethical restrictions are removed”.

“The only thing left is building a prototype by combining all the features into a single device”, the science communicator said.

He speaks about “imagining the future”, which means thinking about the future ahead reduces the pain and hard work today’s women are doing.

As per the Metro report, he added that “About 300,000 women die due to pregnancy complications each year”.

All about the Pod

Sensors reading the DNA

This EctoLife artificial womb pod is designed in such a way that it should look like a natural mother’s womb. This is oval-shaped and had transparent glass through which anyone can see the baby. This pod will be filled up with Artificial Amniotic Fluid. Basically, amniotic fluid is made up of Mother’s Body Water and the Baby’s Urine. Because of this, the baby gets some important nutrients, hormones and growth factors.

According to Al-Ghaili, this Artificial Amniotic Fluid can be replaced by the Lactate Ringer’s Solution. Medically, Lactate Ringer’s Solution is alike human body water. With this pod, many other types of machinery will be connected which will monitor child growth.

These pods will have 360° cameras to monitor all the processes inside the pod. The pod will be connected to an App which will show all the changes through a time-lapse video. There would be an inbuilt sound inside the pod through which your child could hear your voice and recognise you after birth.

Censors inside the Pod

There will be three censors inside the pod. All three have different work.

  1. Bioimpedance Sensor
  2. Electrocardiogram (ECG)
  3. Photo-plethysmography

Bioimpedance Sensor

This sensor passes a weak current to the baby’s body which will check what is the composition of the baby’s body for water and mass of the body.

Electrocardiogram (ECG)

Electrocardiogram is also known as ECG which will measure the heart rate of the baby.

Photo-plethysmography

This censor will measure the oxygen level of the baby.

Pros of the Artificial Womb Pod Concept

EctoLife will be beneficial for less populated countries

According to Al-Ghaili, this concept can minimize the rate of death due to pregnancy complications. He also added, it can be a solution for cancer patients to keep safe their newborn babies. Therefore, if this concept comes to the truth then the women who have removed their uteruses can have babies.

This concept allows parents to have a customisable IQ baby under Elite Package. There are many countries that are suffering from the less population of the young generation like South Korea, Bulgaria, and Japan. So, these artificial womb concepts can change the whole world.

Cons of this Pod concept

As expected, the whole cycle of life would be disturbed if this concept comes true. Anyone who is rich can have a high IQ level baby by using Elite Package and that can be disastrous. So, there may be so much disturbance in the world if such a thing happens.

Facilities –

The EctoLife concept will be laced with high-tech solutions. In the viral youtube video, the narrator said, the parents can feel the touch of the baby and they can also share it with their family members. Moreover, they will get a VR headset to hear what their baby is hearing and can also see what their baby is seeing.

If such a concept comes true then you can set this artificial womb in your home. There is one more AI feature it has and that is you can experience the kicks and movements of the baby in real-time.

Elite Package

This concept allows you to customise your baby’s genes. In the elite package, you will be asked how you want your baby to be. You can customise the following things in your baby’s DNA –

  1. Level of Intelligence
  2. Height
  3. Hair Colour
  4. Eye Colour
  5. Physical Strength
  6. Skin tone

You can choose one gene among 300+ genes for your baby. The process is to genetically engineer the embryo before implanting it into an artificial womb.
